Mt. Vesuvius
Mt. Vesuvius is an active volcano on the mainland of Europe (ONLY one!). It is 4190 feet tall and it is 17,000 years old. The base is almost 30 miles wide! Two small settlements were at the base of the mountain, Pompeii and Herculaneum. The people of Pompeii didn't even realize that Mt. Vesuvius was a volcano because it hasn't erupted in 1,800 years. Up to this day, the volcano has erupted about 50 times so far!
